Context
As a Digital Media Intern for the Cal Poly Athletics Department, I designed a banner to promote the Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Wrestling, and Swimming and diving schedules for the Winter 2021-2022 season. This banner would be prominently displayed on the side of our centrally located campus gym, ensuring high visibility among students and visitors.
The design needed to include a player from each sport and essential elements such as social media tags, sponsor logos, and event details. The challenge was creating a layout that presented this information clearly and maintained visual harmony across the diverse elements.
Process
Design Development
The project started with gathering all the necessary elements, including photographs of athletes, event schedules, sponsor logos, and branding guidelines. My primary challenge was to utilize a grid system effectively to organize the text, ensuring that the times, opponents, and dates were clear and easy to follow.

Layout & Composition
I approached the layout with a strong focus on hierarchy, ensuring that the most essential information—like event dates and sports—was prominent. I experimented with different grid structures, balancing text-heavy sections with the visual elements of the athletes and branding.

Iteration & Feedback
The design underwent several iterations to align with the Cal Poly Athletics branding and meet my supervisors' expectations. Feedback focused on ensuring that the grid system was consistent and that all required elements were integrated without overwhelming the viewer.

Outcome
The banner’s successful deployment marked a significant achievement early in my college career. It was rewarding to see my work displayed prominently on campus, contributing to Cal Poly Athletics' visibility. The experience reinforced my skills in grid-based design and demonstrated the importance of combining visual appeal with clear communication. This project was a foundation for more complex design challenges in my later work.
